A composite chart is a powerful tool in relationship astrology. Basically, it's the birth chart of the relationship itself. Instead of comparing two individual charts like in synastry, the composite chart creates a brand-new chart by calculating the midpoints between each person’s planets
Because sometimes, two people with great synastry still struggle as a couple, and the composite chart often reveals why. Maybe the relationship has a T-square to Saturn so it feels heavy, even if the chemistry is fire. Or maybe there's a Grand Trine in water—so being together feels healing and natural, even if you’re wildly different individuals.
The composite chart shows the shared energy of the relationship—how the two of you function as a unit:
Your emotional dynamic (composite Moon)
Your relationship identity and purpose (composite Sun)
Your love style (composite Venus)
Challenges and growth areas (composite Saturn, Pluto, etc.)
I've done quite a series on composite charts on my blog where I breakdown aspect by aspect the energy in composite charts. In this post, I'd like to summarize my favourite and what I consider to be the worst aspects in composite, based on personal experience. Let's dive in!
5 Best aspects in Composite charts
Best in composite charts: Jupiter-Sun
This one is one of my favourite simply because all of my long-term relationships had it. I've done hundreds of composite charts for my clients and it didn't necessarily come up as a major recurring aspects for them, so don't take this as a necessity but it's simply one of my favourite aspect to have in a composite. Jupiter-Sun aspects in the composite chart (specifically, the conjunction) gives a relationship that is very growth-oriented.
Both people come out of the relationship very much larger than they were before, wiser, more experienced, and there's a jovial and fun energy to it. There is an inherent generosity to the relationship that is unmistakable and also an energy of hedonism. The partners will share lots of positive and generous moments, which to me is paramount!
The purpose of the relationship is growth and the sign in which it's located will tell you more about the nature of the growth.
Best in composite charts: Venus-Sun
This one is pretty straightforward. When you see Venus-Sun in the composite you know the two people genuinely like each other and genuinely value one another. It's VERY typical of romantic relationships and especially those relationships which are rooted in infatuation and romantic love. Usually there is a high degree of infatuation, attraction, and genuinely LIKING each other. It's really top notch and means the purpose of the relationship is romantic love.
Best in composite charts: Venus-Moon
I really like this one, it's just so sweet and nourishing. Venus-Moon is a very emotionally-attuned relationship where both partners are eager to meet each other's needs. There's a high degree of affection, a lot of cuddles, pet names and sweetness. This isn't necessarily an aspect that says "we will die together" but it can truly bond you based on how gentle and sweet the relationship is. I find it gives somewhat of a feminine energy to the relationship which softens any harshness.
Best in composite charts: Venus-Jupiter
This is a pretty common one for married relationships. Venus is love, and Jupiter is law. Usually when you have Venus-Jupiter in aspect in the composite, there is an instinct to make the relationship as official and legal as possible! There is this sense of abundance, generosity and faith in one another, which truly helps with making the relationship feel amazing enough to want to lock it down. Usually there are LOTS of beautiful moments between the pair, indulging in spa, in restaurants and in all good things. I've had this one in almost all of my relationships.
Best in composite charts: Moon-Sun
This one is actually not that common, but I find that relationships with this aspect in the composite seem to truly have this energy of belonging to one another. There's a degree of unity that is hard to match when it's a conjunction, particularly.
Best AND Worst in composite charts: Moon-Pluto
I've had this aspect thrice, Moon conjunct Pluto in the composite chart twice, and once Moon square Pluto, and I genuinely cannot decide if this is the worst aspect to ever be or if it is the best despite the challenges.
This aspect is the "best" because you are legit the most bonded you can ever be with another human being. The closeness is unbreakable, you know each other inside out and this is one of the most deep and inseparable energy to have between two people. This is also the worst because if for one reason or another you don't think the relationship is the best for you, you will still be in literal mud sand, unable to leave. Usually, the attachment between the two partners is just too high. Best be warned!
Moon-Pluto means that the relationship is a container for death and rebirth, extreme psychological inquiry and transformation. Essentially, this is a relationship that acts as a catalyst for therapy for one or both partners (usually, both) and if you're up to the task, this can be life-changing. But I also find this aspect to mean the relationship can truly be draining. This is also one of those yellow flags because if one or both partners don't have the skill to contain the intensity of the emotional interplays, this can quickly turn abusive. I had a long-term relationship with the conjunction and although we were indeed incredibly close and bonded and we had this therapeutic bond, I felt like I didn't want this relationship anymore for other reasons and it took me a whole year and several attempts to actually end it. In my relationship with Moon square Pluto in the composite, I very much adored him but he was emotionally abusive and I left him rather quickly. I remained unable to date and completely stuck on the guy for YEARS which made absolutely no sense to me given we had only dated for a few months. It eventually broke but I was completely paralyzed by the phantom bond. I vote this one BOTH best and worst.
5 worst aspects in Composite charts
Worst in composite charts: Mars-Uranus
Relationships with Mars in hard aspect to Uranus tend to have either an on/off energy to them, or, there's a great difficulty in working together in a way where you end up both working independently and slowly (or quickly) drifting away from one another as it seems hard to adjust your teamplay. This usually is a relationship with little peace or harmony.
Worst in composite charts: Mars-Neptune
A LOT of time Mars-Neptune in the composite means that the relationship will end up in a deceiving and disappointing way. I've seen this a lot when there are actual lies, deceit, and abandonment. Now this isn't always the case, it does happen that two well-meaning people enter a relationship with Mars-Neptune, but even in these cases, there seem to be a disintegrating and disappointing or escapist energy to it. I recall Megan & Prince Harry having this aspect in their composite and I thought how tragic, this love story that ends in escaping the royal family and an harassment campaign by the media. It felt very much like Mars-Neptune to me in how the disintegrating energy played out. I find this is an orange flag for the composite chart.
Worst in composite charts: Mars-Pluto
Usually composite charts with Mars-Pluto (hard aspect) have problems with trust that are quite often rooted in actual betrayal. With this one there's usually a covert power play happening that prevents both partners from being in harmony. One partner might have done underhanded things that eventually catches up to them and ruin the foundation of the relationship. Or, no one has done anything undermining, but there's an odd tension underlying it all that is often rooted in distrust or desire for power. One couple who has them conjunct in their composite is the Biebers and the lore persists.
Worst in composite charts: Sun-Saturn
I've had Sun square Saturn and Sun opposite Saturn in composite charts, and I would say both of these specific aspects are incredibly frustrating. There's something about the relationship that feels like there's always an obstacle that must be eliminated. One or both partners have fears or defences that put the relationship on hold as one or both partner need to process an obstacle and remove it. There's also a sense of not fully accepting one another and having the desire to mold/change the partner. This is usually shared by both people and typically represent a misalignment in goals. Oddly enough this aspect does tend to mean that both people WANT to work together and build together, but something is standing in the way, and it's usually fear, defences, or a timeline misalignment.
Worst in composite charts: Venus-Saturn
Very similar to Sun-Saturn, but it's even sadder. If Venus receives other aspects then it will just act as glue, but hard aspects between Venus and Saturn in the composite chart tend to mean that the relationship can feel distant, cold, or even rejecting. It's one of those where you are together and yet feel the coldness of the relationship.
